Demo: The Sony a9’s Eye-Tracking Autofocus is Crazy Accurate

Sony claims the a9 is an autofocus tracking monster—its 693-point AF system performing 60 AF/AE calculations every second. But that’s not limited to regular subject tracking; as this demo video shows, the eye-tracking AF has been significantly improved as well.

Sony Alpha Rumors spotted the demo, which was posted to YouTube by a Japanese camera tester. In it, you see one person zig zagging through the frame, turning around, moving forwards and backwards trying to trick the camera. But the camera refuses to be fooled, the a9 keeps an AF pixel fixed on one of his eyes at all times, switching to face detection only when absolutely necessary.

Check it out for yourself up top, and if you wanna dive deeper, you can find more Sony a9 demos and our release coverage at this link.
